Ashlee Simpson
The fall runways were rife with mod-inspired looks, which is just one of the reasons we like the mod-inspired outfit Ashlee Simpson wore while out and about in Los Angeles last week. Her boldly-striped sweater looks oh-so chic paired with black skinny jeans, ballet flats, and a newsboy cap. Not only does the outfit instantly evoke thoughts of Edie Sedgwick, but it also features an effortlessly stylish color combination. In addition, we like the way Ashlee balanced the oversized silhouette of the sweater with ultra-tight skinny jeans. To put together an equally chic look, pick up a sweater like Nasty Gal’s Pepe Stripe Sweater ($58) or Topshop’s Stripe Mohair Sweater ($84) and pair it with pieces like Eugenia Kim’s Newsboy Cap ($88) and Michael Michael Kors’ Hamilton Cross-Body Bag ($155).
Kirsten Dunst
If you live in a place that experiences a mild fall/winter season, make sure you take notes from Kirsten Dunst, who was spotted out and about in Los Angeles last week wearing a lightweight grey sweater and pale pink corduroy shorts. We like that Kirsten’s sweater has a sporty, casual vibe. Not only does it work well with equally low-key pieces—like Kirsten’s shorts, for example—but it would also work well with more glamorous pieces like a metallic skirt or leather pants. To create your own casually-cool look, pick up a sweater like Lot78′s Jersey Crew Cotton Sweater ($145) or Zara’s Ultrafine Cashmere Jersey Sweater ($89.90) and pair it with pieces like Current/Elliott’s Ankle Corduroy Skinny Pants ($188) or Free People’s Backstage Fever Sequin Bodycon Skirt ($148).
Rachel Bilson
Given that fall weather can be, well, unpredictable, learning to layer is a key part of your fall fashion plan. On that note, we love the outfit Rachel Bilson put together for a day out in Los Angeles last week. Firstly, we love that Rachel chose a cardigan with an interesting print—a swan! This gives her otherwise simple ensemble an interesting and surprising twist, elevating it from basic to anything but! Plus, of course, we like the practical element: the cardigan is easily removed when the sun comes out. To make this look your own, pick up a cardigan like Wildfox’s Manhattan Cardigan ($275) or Moon Collection’s Ze-brouhaha Cardigan ($54.99) and pair it with pieces like Siwy’s Hannah Slim Ankle Jeans ($196) and J Crew’s Silvana Sandals ($98).
Emma Watson
Finally, we turn to Emma Watson, who was spotted arriving at Heathrow Airport in London earlier this month wearing a black cape-style sweater, jeans, and motorcycle boots. Now, while Emma wore this cozy sweater for a long-haul flight—and we definitely agree with her choice—this style of sweater is also perfect for those particularly cold fall days. The best part? It can be dressed down, or it can be dressed up—simply swap out your low-key boots for a pair of thigh-high platform boots and you are all set. To try this look for yourself, pick up a sweater like Paul & Joe Sister’s Oswald Sweater ($217.80) or Vince Camuto’s Epaulet Sweater ($150) and pair it with pieces like Freebird’s Harness Boots ($328) or Sam Edelman’s Remy Boots ($275).
