Trend Report: Posh Punk

Alexander Wang
As we mentioned, the posh-punk look was first spotted at the Alexander Wang fall 2011 show, where the designer sent out models wearing drainpipe jeans, cocoon coats, and slashed skirts, among other items. The key to emulating the Wang look is to balance edgy pieces with sophisticated silhouettes—for instance, a pair of metallic skinny pants with an oversized wool coat. To fully capture the vibe, opt for a barely-there beauty look and bedhead hair. On that note, if you are ready to make this look your own, we suggest checking out pieces like Zara’s Printed Trousers ($80), 3.1 Phillip Lim’s Drawstring Bomber Jacket ($575), and Alexander Wang’s Leather-Paneled Cotton-Blend Utility Coat ($1,175).
Fergie
The great thing about this trend is that you don’t have to work overtime to try it out. Take, for instance, the look that Fergie put together for a Los Angeles party back in December. Her black leather dress—complete with stud and fringe embellishments—had an edgy, rock ‘n’ roll vibe, which Fergie balanced by simply adding a pair of black pumps. In an instant, Fergie channeled the posh-punk trend, using just two easy pieces. To try Fergie’s look for yourself, pair a dress like Theyskens’ Theory’s Duala Frey Leather & Tweed Dress ($895) or Diane von Furstenberg’s Strapless Leather Dress ($640) with Pour La Victoire’s Loelle Pointed Toe Patent Pumps ($200).
Rihanna
Happily, this trend is not limited to any one style of clothing, so if you prefer pants over dresses, you are in luck. That said, we suggest you take notes from Rihanna, who was recently spotted out and about in London wearing leather pants, a leather-sleeved coat, and a Rottweiler-printed Givenchy sweater. Although all three of these pieces have a rocker-chic vibe, they don’t feel over the top. This is thanks in part to the fact that Rihanna has chosen sophisticated silhouettes, which give her “punk” pieces their “posh” twist. To make Rihanna’s look your own, pair Mango’s Leather Pants ($400) and Veda’s Swing Coat ($442) with Lauren Moshi’s Farrah Tiger Face Sweatshirt ($127).
Rooney Mara
Given that Rooney Mara is the star of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, another source of inspiration for this trend, it is no surprise to see that Rooney herself has taken on this style of dressing. At a Rome photo call for the film, Rooney wore a black leather cut-out dress, which she paired with peep-toe heels. Although the leather gives her outfit an edgy vibe, Rooney has balanced this by picking a flirty silhouette and feminine heels. The result is an easy-to-wear outfit that epitomizes the posh-punk trend. To try Rooney’s look yourself, pair Gestuz’s Leather Cut-Out Dress ($233) or Alexander Wang’s Cut-Out Detail Dress ($1,145) with B Brian Atwood’s Bambola Pumps ($325).
