Trend Report: Posh Punk

Alexander Wang
As we mentioned, the posh-punk look was first spotted at the Alexander Wang fall 2011 show, where the designer sent out models wearing drainpipe jeans, cocoon coats, and slashed skirts, among other items. The key to emulating the Wang look is to balance edgy pieces with sophisticated silhouettes—for instance, a pair of metallic skinny pants with an oversized wool coat. To fully capture the vibe, opt for a barely-there beauty look and bedhead hair. On that note, if you are ready to make this look your own, we suggest checking out pieces like Zara’s Printed Trousers ($80), 3.1 Phillip Lim’s Drawstring Bomber Jacket ($575), and Alexander Wang’s Leather-Paneled Cotton-Blend Utility Coat ($1,175).
Fergie
The great thing about this trend is that you don’t have to work overtime to try it out. Take, for instance, the look that Fergie put together for a Los Angeles party back in December. Her black leather dress—complete with stud and fringe embellishments—had an edgy, rock ‘n’ roll vibe, which Fergie balanced by simply adding a pair of black pumps. In an instant, Fergie channeled the posh-punk trend, using just two easy pieces. To try Fergie’s look for yourself, pair a dress like Theyskens’ Theory’s Duala Frey Leather & Tweed Dress ($895) or Diane von Furstenberg’s Strapless Leather Dress ($640) with Pour La Victoire’s Loelle Pointed Toe Patent Pumps ($200).
Rihanna
Happily, this trend is not limited to any one style of clothing, so if you prefer pants over dresses, you are in luck. That said, we suggest you take notes from Rihanna, who was recently spotted out and about in London wearing leather pants, a leather-sleeved coat, and a Rottweiler-printed Givenchy sweater. Although all three of these pieces have a rocker-chic vibe, they don’t feel over the top. This is thanks in part to the fact that Rihanna has chosen sophisticated silhouettes, which give her “punk” pieces their “posh” twist. To make Rihanna’s look your own, pair Mango’s Leather Pants ($400) and Veda’s Swing Coat ($442) with Lauren Moshi’s Farrah Tiger Face Sweatshirt ($127).
Rooney Mara
Given that Rooney Mara is the star of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, another source of inspiration for this trend, it is no surprise to see that Rooney herself has taken on this style of dressing. At a Rome photo call for the film, Rooney wore a black leather cut-out dress, which she paired with peep-toe heels. Although the leather gives her outfit an edgy vibe, Rooney has balanced this by picking a flirty silhouette and feminine heels. The result is an easy-to-wear outfit that epitomizes the posh-punk trend. To try Rooney’s look yourself, pair Gestuz’s Leather Cut-Out Dress ($233) or Alexander Wang’s Cut-Out Detail Dress ($1,145) with B Brian Atwood’s Bambola Pumps ($325).

Here Is Rachel Zoe’s Pre-Fall 2012 Collection

On first glance, Rachel Zoe’s pre-fall 2012 might elicit a “more of the same” response, but that is exactly what we love about the Rachel Zoe Collection. The entire line consistently strays true to Rachel’s own aesthetic: a modern take on 60s/70s attire. Of course, that doesn’t mean there isn’t room to maneuver—pre-fall 2012 features mod silhouettes, subtly sexy gowns, and a Breakfast at Tiffany’s vibe, at times—but one thing remains the same: every piece is something that we can see Rachel wearing while out and about in Los Angeles. Rachel Zoe Collection is sold at stores like Shopbop and Piperlime.

Trend Report: Bright Leather Dresses

Charlize Theron
The best thing about this trend is that you can be as bold as you want to be. Take, for instance, the bright red Dior dress that Charlize Theron wore last week to the premiere of Young Adult. To start, this is a surefire way to stand out from the crowd, but it isn’t for the faint of heart. If you want to go for a similarly bold color, we suggest you do as Charlize has done and opt for simple sandals and a low-key beauty look. On that note, make sure you check out Yves Saint Laurent’s Leather Dress ($3,490) and Cacharel’s Knit-Trimmed Leather Shift Dress ($657). When paired with Max Mara’s Barca Sandals($234), they make for a red hot look!
Blake Lively
Nothing will brighten up the fall/winter season like sunny yellow, which is why we love the ensemble Blake Lively put together for the 2011 Teen Choice Awards back in August. Her yellow Gucci dress was seemingly made to match with her sunny personality, resulting in an outfit that stands out but also feels totally accessible. Also, thanks to the sleek sleeved silhouette, this dress works just as well for day as it does for night. The finishing touch? A pair of leopard-print Christian Louboutin heels, which give the outfit a slight edge. To make this look your own, take a look at dresses like A.L.C.’s Sienna Leather Dress($1,195), which would look amazing when paired with Casadei’s Closed-Toe Slip-Ons ($328).
Brooklyn Decker
Speaking of an edge, we are smitten with the ensemble Brooklyn Decker put together for the 2011 ESPY Awards in July. Her burgundy Jay Ahr dress had an oh-so sexy vibe, made all the more palpable by Brooklyn’s studded Christian Louboutin heels and tough mixed-metal jewelry. The result is an ultra-sexy ensemble that is perfect for parties and red-carpet events. To try this look for yourself, we suggest you do as Brooklyn has done and opt for slightly undone hair and just a few key jewelry pieces—don’t go overboard. On that note, check out these dresses: Halston’s Leather Mini Dress ($359) and Robert Rodriguez’s Seamed Leather Dress ($695). Both would look amazing with Gianvito Rossi’s Studded Pointy Pumps ($719).
Zoe Saldana
We have covered bold looks, playful looks, and sexy looks, now it is time to cover a soft, feminine look. Back in August, Zoe Saldana attended a screening of her film, Colombiana, in Los Angeles. For the occasion, Zoe wore a pink Valentino dress. Now, the pretty pink shade instantly evokes a feminine vibe, but Zoe emphasized the mood by adding accessories with a similarly soft feel—specifically, blush-hued Christian Louboutin heels and a gold-tinted Salvatore Ferragamo clutch. A dash of pink lipstick completed the look. The result is decidedly feminine and oh-so chic. To try an equally pretty look, check out Gucci’s Belted Leather Dress ($1,450), which would look amazing when paired Diane von Furstenberg’s Dusty Nude Patent Pumps ($310).

Style Ideas: Winter 2012

Gift Shopping
When shopping for gifts, you need an outfit that is as sensible as it is stylish, which is why we suggest you look to Zoe Saldana for ideas. There are a few things to note about Zoe’s outfit. Firstly, Zoe has made sure to choose a pair of flat leather boots, which allow her to walk from shop to shop without losing steam. Secondly, Zoe has opted for a preppy sweater and button-down combination, which looks stylish, but is also effortless and unlikely to weigh her down with fussy details. To make this gift shopping-ready look your own, pick up J Crew’s Cashmere V-Neck Sweater ($168) and Loft’s Button-Down Shirt ($40) and pair them with your favorite jeans. Then, simply throw on Enzo Angiolini’s Zapata Riding Boots($159) to complete the look.
Family Reunion
Whether you are heading home, having the whole family come to you, or heading somewhere in between, figuring out what to wear will be the least of your worries. On that note, we suggest you look to Kristen Bell for outfit inspiration. Let’s break her outfit down. By pairing a cropped pink sweater over a light pink top, Kristen has given her outfit a fun and feminine element. Her black jeans ensure that the outfit errs on the casual side, while her silver heels add a festive and glamorous twist. Inspired? To try this family reunion-ready look for yourself, pair Silence & Noise’s Cropped Tee ($34) and Guess’sLong-Sleeve Brynn Tee ($44) with a pair of skinny jeans. Then, finish the look with Pour La Victoire’sMetallic Irina Snake Platform Heels ($183).
Winter Vacation
If you are jetting off for a vacation this winter, make sure you look to Sienna Miller for outfit ideas. Sienna was recently spotted at the airport wearing a striped tee, a soft knit cardigan, blue jeans, and Vivienne Westwood boots. This outfit is perfect for a few reasons. It is comfortable enough for a flight, but chic enough for a stylish arrival. Plus, the different layers mean that it can be cozy in a cold location, but breezy if you are landing in a warm location. To make this winter vacation-ready look your own, pick up Sienna’s exact top—Rag & Bone/Jean’s Long-Sleeve Pocket Tee ($125)—and layer it under Topshop’s Hand-Knitted Cable Cardigan ($170). Then, simply add a pair of jeans and Aldo’s Bubb Side-Buckle Heeled Ankle Boots ($73).
New Year’s Eve Party
If you are coming up short when it comes to New Year’s Eve outfit ideas, just look to Olivia Palermo for outfit inspiration. Notice how Olivia has picked out a little black dress embellished with sequins? This ensures her outfit will stand out from the crowd. Additionally, by adding a small selection of smart accessories—statement heels, a clutch, a bracelet, and a cocktail ring—Olivia has given her outfit a glam twist without stealing focus from her dress. The result? An outfit that is as effortless as it looks. To try it for yourself, pair a dress like Rachel Zoe’s Yvonne Sequined Wrap Dress ($525) or Staring at Stars’Dolman Sequin Knit Dress ($59) with Valentino’s Rockstud Sandals ($895) and Ted Baker’s Minkie Bobble Matinee Clutch ($145). Voila!
